Cobbles & Vines basket | beginner crochet free pattern

The Cobbles & Vines Book Basket is a quick and fun crochet pattern to create a cute and sturdy basket to always have your favourite trinkets in their own little nook!  You can also crochet a bigger version for a super-cute and original plant pot cover!

The stitch used is custom, easy, and fully explained in the pattern, and it requires colour change only once, so no worries about having too many ends to weave in! It uses little yarn, and it’s a quick make, so it’s perfect for destashing and as a gift for your loved ones!

Crochet Level:

This pattern is perfect for beginners crocheter.

Yarn:

DK yarn. I used Prima 100% Super Soft DK Acrylic Yarn (100 g/290 m)

Colour A (sage green in pics): 20 g

Colour B (liliac): 10 g

Hook:

4.5mm crochet hook

Stitches and abbreviations used:

Chain: ch
Front Post Double crochet: fpdc (find a quick video here)

increase sc: place 2 sc in the same stitch

front-loop-only sc

Magic Circle
Single Crochet*: sc
Stitch(es): st(s)
Turning chain: tc - does not count as a stitch

* Tip: For a sturdier make, crochet the single crochet with the yarn under instead of yarn over method, so: 

insert the hook, yarn under, pull up a loop, pull through two loops.

Special techniques:

Front Post Double crochet: 

Find a quick video here

yo and insert your hook behind the single crochet three rows below, yo (3 loops on the hook). Pull through two loops. Pull through two loops again (1 loop on the hook).

Colour change: Here the colour of yarn is changed every two rows at the end of the row. To change colour from colour A to colour B, or the other way around, for the last sc of the row, insert the hook as usual, but yarn over with the new colour. Tc in the new colour, and follow the next row as from instruction.

4.5 mm hook

10 cm x 10 cm = 15 sts x 4 set of squares (that is, 16 rows in pattern)

 

In Colour A (Note: blue in pics):

ch 15

Row 1: sc in the second ch from hook. sc in each ch. tc. [14]

In Colour B (Note: sage green in pics):

Row2: sc until the end of the row. tc. [14]

Row3: sc until the end of the row. tc. [14]

In Colour A

Row 4:  *sc in the first two sts, fpdc in the next st - placed three rows below*. Repeat until you have 2 sts left. Place a sc in each. tc. [14]

Note: the fpdc is placed in the only sc sts row in Colour A

Row 5: sc until the end of the row. tc. [14]

With row 5, the first set of squares. 

Repeat for another 3 sets of squares. 4 sets of squares in total.

Pattern:

In Color B

Magic circle

Row 1: Place 6 sc in magic circle [6], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

Row 2: 1 sc increase in each st [12], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

Row 3: *1 sc, 1 sc increase* until the stitch mark [18], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

Row 4: *2 sc, 1 sc increase* until the stitch mark [24], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

Row 5: *3 sc, 1 sc increase* until the stitch mark [30], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

Row 6: *4 sc, 1 sc increase* until the stitch mark [36], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

Row 7: *5 sc, 1 sc increase* until the stitch mark [42], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

In Colour B

Row 8: 42 front loop only sc [42], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

Row 9: 42 front loop only sc [42], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

In Colour A:

Row 10: *sc in the first two sts, fpdc in the next st - placed three rows below*. [42], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

Row 11: 42 front loop only sc [42], place a stitch mark in final st, and keep working in the round

Repeat Rows 8 to 11 another time.
