In colours: Moss green, Pistachio, Red Clay, Mustard, Brown, Vanilla Cream, Black
Around 15 grams each for the green, 2/5 grams for the other colours
Materials:
Wooden Dowel (mine is 15 cm), tapestry needle
Hook:
3 mm crochet hook
Final Sizes:
Mine is 60 cm from the hook to the bottom of the longest vine, with a dowel of 30 cm
Stitches and abbreviations used (USA terminology):
Chain: ch
Double Crochet: dc
Treble Crochet: tri
Decrease Sc (that is, insert the hook and pull up a loop (2 loops on the hook). Insert the hook in the next st. Pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook). Yarn over, pull through all loops. ): dec sc
Increase sc (that is, place 2 sc in the same stitch): inc sc
Magic Ring: MR
Single Crochet: sc
Slip stitch: slst
Pattern:
Here, I first give the pattern for the four components (little leaf, heart-shaped leaf, little flower, sunflower). Then, I'll explain how you can create the vines including these components. In the end, I'll explain how to mount the vines on the dowel and how to hang it.
Little leaf:
The little leaf is very simple to crochet, and it works in this way:
ch 6, slst in the second ch from the hook. Then sc, dc, sc, slst in each chain.
Heart-shaped Leaf:
ch 6
dc in the first ch (the first ch is the base of the leaf)
*ch1, dc again in the base of the leaf.*
Repeat between ** for three times in total
Now ch 3, and dc again in the base of the leaf.
*ch1, dc again in the base of the leaf.*
Repeat between ** for three times in total
ch 3 and slst in the base of the leaf
Little flower:
I use two colours: one for the central part of the flower, and one for the petal
Starting with the colour for the central part of the flower
Make a MR
Place 6 sc sts into the MR, pull the yarn to close the MR.
Slst in first sc
Change colour to the petal colour
*Hdc, dc, hdc in the first st, slst in the next st*
Repeat between ** for a total of 5 petals
Then, slst in the final sc
Sunflower/bigger flower:
I use two colours: one for the central part of the flower, and one for the petal
Starting with the colour for the central part of the flower
Make a MR
Place 6 sc sts into the MR, pull the yarn to close the MR.
Slst in first sc
Place a inc sc in each of the 6 sts (12 sts in total)
Change colour to the petal colour
*Hdc, tri, ch1, tri, hdc in the first st, slst in the next st*
Repeat between ** for a total of 8 petals
Then, slst in the final sc
How to crochet the vines:
Crocheting the vines is very simple: start with any of the four components, for example, with the heart-shaped leaf.
Then, you can just chain and fasten off to create a vine. Or, to have more components on a single vine, chain to build distance between the components. Let's say, ch 5.
After these ch to build distance, you can add any of the other components!
I'll add here the pattern for a few possible vines as an example, but you can use your own imagination to build any vines, as long as you wish and with as many components as you fancy!
For example:
1) Crochet the heart shaped leaf, ch 5, simple leaf, ch 3, simple leaf again, then ch 5 and fasten off, leaving a tail to secure the vines on the dowel.
2) Crochet the heart shaped leaf, ch 9, simple leaf, ch 3, simple leaf again, then ch 3, heart shaped leaf, ch 5, and fasten off, leaving a tail to secure the vines on the dowel.
3) Crochet the sunflower, and attach green yarn with a slst. Now you can simply ch 24 and fasten off.
You can combine these different components as you want! Find the combinations you like the most and start planning your arrangement for the Whimsical spring garden!
Make as many vines as you wish! Position them on top of the dowel to think about the arrangement you want to realise!
Assembly:
When I have all my vines, I simply use a needle to secure the vines to the dowel. I simply thread the yarn in the needle and insert in and out the first couple of chains a few times to make sure it is secured. You can also simply wrap the thread around the top and do a little knot.
Here you can see how I have a little room at the top. You can have it tight around the dowel if you prefer!
Then, I weave in the ends at the bottom and at the top of the vines.
Once everything is ready, give it a little steam to have a neater look.
Hang it to the wall:
To hang it on the wall, I simply ch 70, leaving yarn at the slip knot to make sure you can secure the chain to the dowel. Fasten off leaving a tail to secure the chain to the dowel on the second side.
Simply wrap the extra yarn at the edges and secure the chain with a knot. Cut off the extra yarn
